What does "practice" even mean?

My piano teacher was fond of saying:

If I don’t practice one day, I know.

If I don’t practice for two days, my agent knows.

If I don’t practice for three days, my audience knows.

Practice is vital to any form of development, be that learning or mastery.

But what is practice?

A vital aspect is the daily visit. Any rhythm begins with a single beat. Binding it to the day connects it to a primal cycle, echoing through the eons.

But beyond these visits, what then?

While sitting in front of the materials, the instrument, or the craft, we can always rest the mind on the intention:

  • Where are we now?
  • Where do we envision moving?
  • What is a gentle next step in that direction?

Certainly, there is more, but simply starting here is already moving far.
