Clock Time vs Self Time

Clock Time vs Self Time

How long will this take? Should I start it now?

Tick tock, tick tock, …

When will it begin? When will I be done?

Tick tock, tick tock, …

A clock’s markers are vital to synchronizing the machinations of meetings amongst us.

But our decisions and actions live in the moment–the mornings, the evenings, and the wee hours of the night.

Clock time isn’t the only time. In fact, I’m not sure it’s time at all.

Seconds, minutes, hours–these are only measures.

Experience is where we more truly find its flow.

Earlier, I saw a show. Now, I write. Later, maybe I’ll head to the kitchen for a spell.

Work and play come through in waves. A little here, a swell there.

A gentle breeze becomes a strong gale. Winds curl waters of thought and emotion, floating or crashing past the clock’s clicks.

Of course, some of our days can grow rigid, one meeting after the next, the clock’s face staring us down with every turn.

But, when able to skillfully use the clock’s tick tock’s, we do so knowing they are only beacons, markers around which we can decide to plot course or drift.

The clock is not time.
