Our tools can come to represent efficiency in ourselves and others, but this representation is distorted.
While I’ve made a name for myself with one of the more powerful task management apps out there, I still make mistakes. And I have no illusions that I will not make more.
It won’t tell me what to do unless I know how to arrange for a clear return. It won’t *make me* do anything.
Recently, after one particular error, my daughter even said,
“That’s not very “OmniFocus” of you,”
I’d turned down an invite from a friend for a boat ride due to what I thought was a conflicting obligation. But the night before, I suddenly realized that I actually could make it.
After going through my neurotic gymnastics of wondering if I were still invited, feeling awkward to ask, and the like, my daughter became understandably annoyed, and made the comment above.
We are not our tools.
Note taking apps, ChatGPT, and the like can all seduce us with whatever promises. We are still responsible for the use of our tools, not to mention building the skills to use them well.

PS Getting Started, the 5th module for Waves of Focus, is nearly done. Beginning things, particularly difficult things, is not a trivial matter. If you’re at all interested in learning the skills to begin guiding your waves of focus, come on by.

PPPS We made it out to the boat and had a grand ol’ time.
Productivity is many things. For some, it is about doing a lot in a little time.
But, truly, productivity is so much more. It is about:
- Setting yourself up for success.
- Being focused where you want to be.
- Doing things that you find meaningful.
- Being creative, sometimes even in harsh environments.
- Forging your own paths.
- Finding your voice and delivering it well.
- Knowing and actively deciding on your obligations.
- Knowing where and how to say “no”.
- Avoiding procrastination.
Too often, many of us fall into just going along with and fighting whatever the world throws at us. “Go with the flow!”, we say. Meanwhile, we might think, “I’d like to do that one thing. Maybe one day I will.” The days go by. The goal never arrives, and then we wonder why or blame circumstance.
But when we learn to take charge of our lives and the world
around us, we start living life with intention.
Of course, striking out may seem scary. It takes courage to live life with purpose and on purpose. Roadblocks and worries, fears and concerns show up everywhere.
This is my passion. I want to help you to find that sense of your own unique play to meet the world so that you can:
- Create a life that is yours.
- Find and follow an inner guide in a way that works for you and those you care for.
- Decide on your obligations and meet them while building the world you want.
